My Bio

My uncle started taking me fishing with him when I was 9. We used to go on the river Dove and the canals and I was "hooked" straight away!!! My Grandad also used to take me to the river Dove for a few hours once a week, I have to laugh now because i was lucky to fish for 1/2 an hour.....he had the rod the rest of the time !!!! I got involved in match fishing for the local youth club then started to fish for British Gypsum once a year in a team event at JCB at Rocester. In my second year I was placed second in my section and was awarded a trophy....Unforgettable!!!

As the years have passed I've fished from rivers to ponds and lakes with an occasional open match resulting in a few wins. I turned my attention to specimen fishing ,carp, barbel and in the winter pike but for the last four years my main target and my passion is the Wels catfish which I target from April to September, then back to pike again until April!!!!

My personal bests are Wels catfish 54lb 3oz,Cudmore Sturgeon 24lb 6oz Lychgate, Pike 21lb 9oz River Dove, Mirror carp 20lb 12oz Pirelli pool, Grass carp 20lb 2oz Shattersford, Common carp 19lb 5oz BMAA club pool, Zander 15lb 3oz unamed venue, Barbel 14lb 6oz River Trent, Bream 10lb 12oz Pirelli pool, Tench 8lb 8oz Pirelli pool, Chubb 5lb 8oz, River Dove, Eel 5lb 4oz Pirelli pool, Perch 3lb 2oz Fleam stream,(runs into the river Dove).

Not another PB Shane!

Due to work patterns, (I work nights and the Mrs works days) we don't get much time to go fishing together anymore so much to my surprise when I picked her up from work Friday afternoon her suggestion was to do a night session!!

With the weather changing and how my shifts fell it would probably be a long time before we could go together again, well with my arm up me back I got straight on the phone to Paul at Lychgate to see if any pegs were free!

Although we'd have to be off by 12 noon Saturday due to bookings, we were ok to go.....he did warn me that the water level had been reduced due to a netting programme soon to take place but all in all we got ready quickly, got some food, flasks and off we went !!!

On arrival the rain started, (Of course Friday 13th)!

I had a quick look to see what pegs were available, spoke to a couple of anglers already fishing who'd opted for the deeper water due to the low level.(I could have got on a peg near them but decided against it because of angling pressure)  opting for the shallower end where no-one was fishing.

The rain was now quite heavy so we started setting up on peg 1!

I was fishing with 3 rods, helicopter rig , chod rig & inline lead with a short hook link to go in a pva bag. I used size 8 barbless hooks on all 3 with baits hair mounted. Infuse bio bloodworm boilies were gonna be put through their paces as this would be the first time I'd tried them!

By 7pm everything was set up and I catapulted some freebies straight out in front of me approx 8ft from the point of the far bank. The helicopter rig went over the top, chod fished to the left and inline lead to the right.

Rain continued throughout, with the odd line bite not much was happening then at 11.30 pm I lost a fish on the inline lead. I was getting the odd indication on the heli rig so fish were moving and will soon hopefully be picking up my baits.

At 1.10am woke up to a screaming run on the heli rod and after a good battle I landed a beautiful mirror carp which weighed in at 24lb !!!

A new PB for me and my second PB in a fortnight !

Nothing else happened but who cares !!! I will be back to this venue though as i think there are at least 4 different 30's in there!

                                                                             Happy angling
